My pedometer has arrived and I couldn’t be happier to go through the sometimes frustrating process necessary to make it work. In truth these have been minor but I find that it does require enthusiasm about what this little gadget is going to do, to make me persist through the various set up steps. Still they’re over with quickly and now it is all about using it.
This is my third pedometer. The first was very good but suffered damage due to being dropped. This one has a safety attachment included. It is also sturdier and has a sensor which eliminates low intensity movement which means that bumping into something is not counted as a step. This can be adjusted to different levels of intensity. I’m really impressed with this aspect as my second pedometer was inexpensive and counted even a slight movement.
In addition, this time there is some material advising how to get the best out of using the monitor. I have researched my choice and am already feeling the benefit from this. As usual it takes a little experience using one to establish your personal preferences but it is always better to start than not start at all.
I have not entered results into a log before but am intending to keep one. I’m going to do it two ways: distance and counting steps.
When starting I think counting steps can be interesting as it identifies for us just how active, comparatively, our normal day can be. For instance a busy mum may expect her day to have more steps than average but it is often not the case. Whereas I have seen some jobs which have unexpected high daily activity, for instance, a hairdresser.
In addition I will be walking to reach a target mileage. I am trying to increase both my daily activity and to bolster energy expenditure by longer distance walking. This is giving me the opportunity to look more closely at calories burned walking.
I have found that at different times or stages of my life different walking programs have suited me because of the attributes of the rest of my life. Gradually i have built it into my life and this now gives me time to experiment by trying what will work best, and be more fun.
One of the best things I have done is start this blog. I highly recommend it. It makes me think out what I’m doing. I feel duty bound to be positive and this in turn means I am enthusiastic about walking. I constantly look for the successes I’m having to keep my motivation high. It reinforces my desire to use walking as my weight management process. After years of dieting I have decided I like food and can eat moderately and well without penalty by exercising sensibly. Eating is still a pleasure and I am joyfully walking to lose weight and maintain my body’s wellbeing.
