Walking to Lose Weight in January

January 1st
It’s simple just to start walking so do that. Sometime today put on your most appropriate walking shoes, pick out a walking route, and organise friends to go with you if that’s the way you want to do it. Walk for at least 20 minutes. This can be broken up into two 10 minute walks.

Alternatively invite your walking buddies over and do a walking DVD inside. If you don’t have buddies or a DVD put the television on and walk on the spot for 30 minutes. It is easier to walk inside so the extra time helps with losing weight.

Now review. Note how long you walked. Keep a special diary, calendar of walking, to be filled out whenever convenient.

Tomorrow we will fix any problems from the first day’s walking to lose weight.

January is the perfect month to start walking to weight loss. Each day this month I will give you an idea, task or tip which will help you keep to that New Year’s resolution to get fit or lose weight.

For people very overweight or unfit the slower approach to the New Year exercise program provided by walking to lose weight may be the better prospect. This is an ongoing process and it requires mental as well as physical commitment. Going full speed at a gym works wonders if you are slightly overweight or have neglected to exercise for a couple of years. Or want to fit into certain clothes which you love but are a little too tight! If you have been long term overweight and couch potato-ish than I would recommend that gym membership only be added if necessary to supplement your walking to lose weight, depending upon your circumstances.

This whole process can be overwhelming and you probably will need help. I use all help available. A lifeline to support, sometimes is necessary if you want to take advantage of the beautiful, healthy body hidden inside of you. Many options exist to live a life independent of aging and disease.

Why? Because this will change your life. It has to be fitted in your life, daily, by creating, or using existing, time to do it. The others who you work, live and play with can help or hinder you by cooperating or not-obviously it would be better if they can positively support your effort. You will be changing many existing habits, whether it’s what you eat, where you eat, what you do at lunchtime, if you take your car or walk, taking the family on activity days etc. Starting walking to lose weight requires a serious commitment to making this process work. You need to build a lifestyle around it.

Starting walking to lose weight requires preparedness and determination, a sense of humour, and an ability to focus on what you want. The mimimum necessary apparatus is sensible shoes suitable for walking; A place to walk outside; a way of walking/exercising inside; a pedometer.

At the beginning of every year I really get focused on exercise. And it works. This time I am doing more than walking to lose weight, I am adding toning and targeted reducing, as I have lost enough weight from walking alone, that tightening my muscles will make a wonderful difference to my appearance and how I look in my clothes. I lost weight by taking the softer approach of setting up a program for walking to lose weight which established a pattern of walking which included as much other incidental exercise as I can fit in, daily. The natural approach to exercise!

With an ongoing training program to make exercise a happy part of life you will never have to “start” again!

This wonderful review on Wii Fit which describes using the Wii Fit Board, successfully to lose weight, has an accurate description of what is required to lose weight.

I generally agree, with these additional comments: the Wii Fit is easy to set up; the assessments are blunt and can be inaccurate; the exercises I do are fun; some of the exercises don’t appeal (yoga, muscle fitness) and I don’t use them because using Wii Fit to supplement my exercise program, I’m not dependent on Wii Fit for strength building exercise.

If you need to be convinced to attend the gym, avoid walking outside and can’t imagine doing it inside, then the Wii Fit program can offer you many options for fun ways to get moving. I like the jogging as a warm up. The step games work as activity particularly if you are counting steps but of course in general a long walk outside would give better results. I weigh in monthly. You can even do this without knowing your weight at all, which I like. I have had 2 weigh ins with one loss and one gain. I haven’t taken the gain too seriously as muscle build up can add weight

As a general policy when exercising to lose weight I enthuse about what is working for me and ignore what isn’t. Often that means that some process or piece of equipment may be imperfect but some of it isn’t, so it’s worth persevering. Walking itself comes into that category. I supplement my weight loss program with the gym, Wii Fit, games, ipods, dvds, friends, forums.

Wii Fit has some limitations in that the already slim or active, who are looking to tone or trim, may expect too much from it. It is definitely aimed at the inactive and overweight where some activity, with gradual increases, will produce results.

Walking to lose weight, while stuck inside, used to be so boring! Not so these days. There are many wonderful options for exercising while at home which are attractive to do. All those with home exercise equipment stored away-now’s the time to get it out! Yes, you! Or: Dance! Clean up! Clear out the rubbish! Put on a favourite walking dvd. Use WiiFit!

What do you get out of being overweight? Make a list of the advantages. Two that come to mind:

being overweight can mean that losing weight is too hard and normal restraint doesn’t apply because it’s too late to make a change;

being overtired is part of being overweight which means I’m always too tired to exercise, and if I exercise then I’m too tired to carry out my responsibilities…

If while you’re eating with restraint you are dreaming of the day you will be able to eat ‘normally’ perhaps your attitude needs exercising to tighten it, because thinking that way is going to make it hard to do and guaranteed to fail.

The new dream needs to be of the day when you are so enamoured of the renovated body and lifestyle you are enjoying that eating is a pleasure but not a primary motivating power in your life, and activity is daily and also a motivating factor in your new life.

If you would like to have a fit, attractive, healthy body, then talk and admire that, when you see it. Ignore anything that does not fit into that category. Do not comment on it. So compliment someone who looks nice and avoid making any asides to a friend when you see someone who’s put on weight, particularly if this person wants to talk about it i.e. how hard it is to lose weight, how she just looks at food and gains weight. When you’re starting out you don’t need sceptics or saboteurs.

I love walking to lose weight at this time of year. Why? Because it is easy to do! I walk to look for toys, friend’s parties or meetings, gift ideas and food/party invitations. It’s crowded-everyone has to walk! I use my time totally. Up early and doing something straight away. Shop or visit during lunch. After work party or shop for clothes or shoes or holiday items.

Most of you are not enjoying summer right now. Some of the above relies on the warm weather but the easiest way to enjoy walking to lose weight during December is to use this time to reinforce your overall goal. Busy means activity, means long hours on your feet-this all counts! Thinking about other people, buying or wrapping gifts, feeding friends, planning parties, is a distraction from food.

Add music and you’ve got a magic combination!

If you are one of the few who don’t currently see the benefits of including fun tools such as ipods or mp3 players in your walking to lose weight accessory list, recent research may cause you to re-think.

Music has value when teaching physical skills to children, can lower stress, increase intelligence and benefits heart patients, makes you feel better, as well as having positively enlivening effects on the heart by expanding blood vessels and by lifting emotions while listening to music you enjoy.

Walking, listening to music, laughing, having fun, relaxing, has an efficacy when applied to our lives. Imagine your doctor writing you a prescription for fun! Take a look at the funner (!) tools-this might be a particular friend who you always have a good time with. Reread some invigorating or inspiring blogs and posts. Post them on the walkling to lose weight FriendFeed room, with a comment.
