Burning Calories
Extra Effort Pays Off
Hopefully you’re already walking to lose weight. This is an ongoing beneficial exercise which is easy to do. To keep burning calories walking, during the holidays, is the most effective way to counter extra calories. If you’re eating more calories and still want to lose weight at the same rate, increase your walking or other activities. It’s simple really!
Adding variety to my existing program when trimming hips, thighs and waist, I like to do the Body Pump classes or weight machines at the gym, and dance or exercise classes. These are terrific for quick body shaping. However an easier way is to add in at home exercise. Looking over the dvds it seems to me the most often recommended is any by Leslie Sansone. Rather than attempting to fit in extra gym time simply add in high calorie burning with a walking dvd.
Another way of doing this which suits me is to take advantage of the season. Activity of all types increases with everyone busier at work, gift shopping, party planning and giving, going out, visiting, etc. This is a natural opportunity to walk, dance or play more!
Burn More Calories
Adding to the weight loss tips from the last post, as discussed, I am now increasing weight loss and trimming inches by doing more. My existing program consists of walking as much as possible throughout a normal day, with the aim of averaging 10,000 steps a day over each week. This generally requires a walk each day specifically to add to my steps. To put it another way- I wear a pedometer every day from first thing in the morning. I take it off just before bed and record the steps I have done that day. During the day I put as much natural walking or other activity into everything I do. So I make decisions based on increasing any walking etc. required, perhaps taking three trips back to the car instead of using a trolley and one trip only. Over and above that to reach the target for any one day of 10,000 steps I will do a dedicated walk i.e. a walk designed to achieve my exercise quotient for the day. I do not usually take a walk lasting over one hour unless I have arranged a specific walking activity to do that.
Christmas Bonus!
Some experts say that one glass of wine per day, for reasons currently unknown, may help with weight loss, as opposed to not drinking or drinking more than 1 glass. This could be used as motivation to limit your drinking to one daily glass, over Christmas.
More Holiday Tips
Go shopping evenings and walk for an hour of additional exercise. When you’re at parties dance! If the hostess is looking for assistants to fetch and carry-do it! Think active! And while you’re being social, festive and helpful, you’re not eating or drinking as much. Decorate the Christmas tree, energetically! This extra effort is posssible because it is not intended to be long term but a short term supplementation of calorie burning to negate any efects of the festive season. Come the New Year when others are thinking about starting to lose weight, you can slip back into your pre-holiday walking routine, and slow down both your exercise and calorie intake, whiile continuing to lose weight.
