Virtual Walking to Lose Weight
Take something someone does, such as David McGillivray in The Last Pick writes about his cross-America run. You could do something similar by picking a favourite place to start, say San Diego, and “walk” to the other side.
However in real life I’m not a long distance walker so even in virtual time I like to have a day goal which I can participate in on my own.
Build in to the activity the option of ‘doing’ it as in going outside and walking or ‘faking’ it by walking inside on a treadmill or in front of the TV or following a walking DVD which gives distances.
Suggested Steps for Starting Your Own Virtual Walk:
1. Pick someplace you want to visit.
2. Is it accessible to walking, dancing or climbing? Maybe you’d like to fake a Wimbledon tennis final of 5 hours duration!
3. Research it – the Internet, via friends, even travel agents.
4. How much walking etc. does it require? Work it out if you can’t see the information immediately.
5. Will it require preparation- do you need to train for it?
6. Create a walking schedule around the training required to get up to speed.
7. Plan ways to make the virtual event special, particularly if this has taken some time to complete-maybe include friends in a celebration at the end.
8. Split it up if it is longer than a normal session or even several. For instance walking between big cities could take several days.
9. Allocate the time and facilities required. Keep a record and cross off distances or hours as you do them. Celebrate when you cross the finish line!
10. Take what you’ve learned from this event and create another which is even better suited to you
