Walking to Lose Weight at Home

Walking to lose weight is a valuable tool even when walking outside is impossible because of rain, sleet or sunshine.

The treadmill is one good option for walking inside. Put it in front of the TV and watch Oprah or a favourite dvd. For longer walks generally as well as to add variety to stimulate increased fitness and introduce different muscles for additional intensity, here are a few changes which can be made to the standard walking program.

1. use the gradient option, even for 5 minute intervals.

2. add arm movements. Basic: swing your arms regularly back and forth as you walk, bend at the elbows for faster speed; or punch the air lightly crossing one arm in front of your body at a time.

3. Increase the speed for short intervals which gets the heart rate up.

Do you love the Wii Fit yet haven’t used it for two months-put the Wii Fit board into a cupboard with other bits and pieces during a cleanup for a series of visitors and a big party over the holiday and haven’t seen it since? Typically what is out of sight and takes a bit of effort to set up (even when it increases the amount of exercise you do) becomes the forgotten. Walking to lose weight rarely comes into this category when you can walk outside but what about when you can’t?

Easier and often just as much fun, pop a walking dvd on and follow a trainer through a series of walking variations.

These have the advantage of being easily accessible, require little space, provide time or distance options making it fit in with an existing walking program such as doing 5 miles a day (with the Walk Away the Pounds dvd this would simply require using the 3 Mile and 2 Mile programs) or use the beginner’s programs which take the thinking out of how much to do and how to do it properly.

There are a variety of options to walking inside but walking in place front of the television is the easiest.

Walking around the house doing extra bends and twists are all good add-ons to the daily walk but not a substitute. Bring walking to lose weight inside!
