Why I started ‘Walking to Lose Weight’!

Maybe it seems odd that I’m doing this blog on walking to lose weight. It has had a long genesis and is a joy to do.

During 2008 I made a significant change to my lifestyle- I have started a business working from home which means that a substantial part of my day I spend in the one environment. I was learning many new job skills, stressing about some of them and generally feeling out of my comfort zone. No time or inclination for exercise, or even ‘normal’ activity and stress-induced “crazy” eating- short term but enough to put on weight. I decided, once I “came out” of this phase, to walk to lose weight- again!

I know walking to lose weight works. I’ve done it successfully on too many occasions. This time I am doing it differently. I am building activity, particularly walking, into the frame of my life. So natural a part that I would miss it too much to go without it. Amongst its many advantages, walking is a phenomenal destressor. Consequently all of my eating and life decisions are healthy and happy ones.

Starting this blog has been quite an appropriate adjunct to a successful walking program- I can see that I have become a person of action, with an active mindset. By this I mean that i am not intimidated by the thought of taking physical action and so do not immediately say no if a suggestion requires action, whereas once this would have been the case. Now, however, as it is spring here, and I am reviving my summer wardrobe, I am aware that it will take a bit more action than I have been doing to fit into some favorite clothing- I need the ‘fast track to weight loss’ walking program. I want to go down one dress size (or more) before December.

By the way I do not weigh myself, especially not daily but even weekly can be counter productive. I use the way my clothes fit as my self-assessment method. That’s why this blog is called ‘walking to lose weight’- I do not focus on the weight loss aspect. It is the overall pursuit of activity which is my main goal. A certain byproduct of this is weight loss and trimming down. My clothes have been becoming looser as I pursued the walking targets.  But much of the success of walking to lose weight comes from the commitment to a positive approach to walking as an ongoing activity. Apparent lack of results, slowing down, plateaus, other’s “better” results, can all delay or freeze your success, if you allow it to demotivate you.

So attitude, attitude, attitude!
